About Me

Dr. Molly Gebrian, DMA

New England Conservatory of Music

I am a professional violist with a background in cognitive neuroscience. My area of expertise is applying the science of learning and memory to practicing and performing. I bring decades of experience as a performer and teacher to this research, translating what scientists have discovered about how we learn into actionable, practical strategies that musicians of all ages and levels can use to improve their practicing and playing.

Individual Class Topics

Class 1: Mental Practice Your mind is your most powerful tool in the practice room and on stage. In this class, we'll learn the science behind mental practicing, why it's so beneficial, and how to incorporate it into your practice routine. Classes 2 and 3: Memorization Preparing for memorized performance can often feel daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Understanding the science of memory can help give you a clear practice roadmap so that you can get on stage and play with confidence. We will cover memorization over two classes so there is ample time for discussion and trying out different memorization techniques. Class 4: Playing Faster Just because you can play something slowly doesn't mean you can play it fast. Learn effective and efficient tools for getting music up to tempo that actually work. Class 5: Attentional Focus A simple switch in focus from what your body is doing to something outside your body can have a dramatic influence on how well you play, both from a technical and expressive perspective. We'll learn the science behind this and ways to apply it in your own practicing and performing.
